Welcome From Our Principal
“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
On August 31, 2016, I will stand on the steps of Boys Prep to welcome almost 300 boys and their families to the 2016-2017 school year. On that Wednesday morning, I will have the privilege and responsibility of building strong boys and putting them on a predictive path to and through college. I am deeply committed to making a positive difference in the lives of children as we continue to promote the ideas of scholarship, merit, responsibility, and brotherhood among our young students. There comes a time in every parent’s life when they have to make one of the most important decisions they will ever make – where to send their child to school. I’m thrilled that you have selected Boys Prep!
Our theme for the school year is “Creating a Counter Narrative”. At Boys Prep when each of our boys looks in the mirror, buttons his blue Oxford shirt, and secures his tie snugly around his neck, we want the person staring back at him to know in his mind and believe in his heart that he is capable of both academic and personal excellence. We strive to develop in him the bold intellect and impeccable character that will make college completion his destiny. At Boys Prep, whether he is one of our Kindergarten students learning to count to 100 or one of our 3rd grade boys developing the skills to make a claim and support it with evidence, we will require him to think hard every day. We will celebrate his successes and ask him to join with us in celebrating the triumphs of his classmates. Boys Prep is a place where we recognize, celebrate, and appreciate all the great things that come with being a boy.
I am honored to be starting my second year as the principal of the first and only all-boys, tuition free, public charter school. I started as a teacher at Girls Prep Bronx Elementary School, was a founding school leader when Girls Prep Bronx Middle School was in its inaugural year in 2014, and am so proud to be the principal of Boys Prep. I am joined on our leadership team by Directors of Curriculum and Assessment, Annie Huynh and Lauren Ornelas; Lewis Hicks, our Director of Student and Family Affairs; Nicole Bavaro, our Assistant Director of Student and Family Affairs; our Learning Specialist Coordinator, Jennifer Mantilla; and Jasmin Candelario, our Director of Operations. These leaders bring a huge amount of expertise, commitment, and energy to our school. Together with the Boys Prep teachers and staff we hope to ensure the school year will be full of learning and fun.
We look forward to a great year!Kristan Norgrove
